A Must-Have In Fukuoka, City Of Fresh Seafood! Breakfast At The Nagahama Fish Market

June 23, 2017 10:00

“Okiyo Shokudo”, opened in 1947, is the oldest eatery inside the Fukuoka City Seafood Market Hall, located in the Fukuoka City Central Wholesale Fish Market. It’s always been used by industry people, and on weekdays it’s open from 6am! In recent years, tourists from other countries have been flocking here in search of delicious Fukuoka seafood.

We recommend the “Gomaburi (Sesame Yellowtail) Set” with three side dishes, rice, pickles, and miso soup. Thick slices of buri, or matured yellowtail, is supple and springy, and is a hefty, luxurious dish. The house-made sesame sauce’s deep roasted aroma whets the appetite, and the blend of sake, mirin (Japanese sherry), and dashi adds additional layers of umami. During this visit we had the classic yellowtail, but depending on the season, horse or blue mackerel or snapper with the same sesame sauce may make an appearance.

There’s about 30 set items, mainly of sashimi, broiled fish, braised fish, fries, and sashimi bowls, but there’s plenty of non-seafood items like chicken karaage and potstickers. The menu is the same throughout breakfast and lunch service, and progresses into an a la carte heavy izakaya menu during dinner. Eating inside the fish market is as fresh as it gets. The meal sets are a display of the myriad of ingredients Fukuoka has to offer; come experience it for breakfast.
