“Yanagibashirengo Market” located a along Sumiyoshi dori, a few minutes walk from Hotel New Otani, is a market where professional chefs rely on.
Currently, there are about 50 specialized shop in the market selling various ingredients such as fresh caught fish, local vegetable, meat, dried goods, fruit, nerimono (fish paste goods), mentaiko, tea, and snacks. They have a reputation of having high quality ingredient. Most of the sales is from food sold to famous restaurants and hotels.
One of the attractiveness of the rengo market is how it changes along the time. Recently, there are wine shops and coffee stands so people in all ages can enjoy here.
■Itoyoshi
It was opened in 1975. There are many chefs who say that it is “the best fish store in Fukuoka”. Expertise, management of the tank, and storage method, everything is the best here.

■Nakaya
Main product of Nakaya is Spicy mentaiko “Hakata Dontaku” which is loved by famous people from Fukuoka. They use high quality and fresh tarako (cod roe), so each egg is firm and have deep flavor. It is soaked in the secret sauce for 5 days and aged for 3 days. It has the flavor that you cannot get tired of even if you eat it every day.

■Yanagibashi Shokudo
It has the reputation of “cheap and delicious” so it is often full during lunch time. It is operated by “Yoshida Fish Shop” in the market. Their famous “Kaisendon (rice bowl with sashimi and seafood)” is very reasonably priced, 670 yen, and it is delicious. You will be surprised at the quality of the fish. The dishes popular among foreign travelers are luxurious “Otoro don” (1650 yen) and “Uni don (urchin bowl)” (4500 yen). However, they are very reasonable because it is in the market!

Popular items are “mamedaifuku” and “sakuramochi” (130 yen each). They also have various other sweets such as “ohagi”, “mitarashi dango”, and “café ole daifuku”.

■manu coffee Yanagibashi shop
They have 5 shops in the city. It is a popular shop that leads the coffee culture in Fukuoka. If you are going there for the first time, try “French press” (520 yen) which let you enjoy the scent and the flavor of the home-roasted beans. They have the standard menu, “café latte” and “cappuccino”(520 yen each) as well as Japanese menu such as “Vanilla wasanbon latte” and “Green café latte” (530 yen each).
