“Food Sample” is a popular souvenir from Japan for foreign visitors. Recently, it was talked about in foreign media so it is getting a lot of attention as a unique culture of Japan.

■Sample RiKi

At “Sample RiKi”, they have experimental workshops on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.

In the experimental workshop, you can make “parfait” and “cookie and cake” which are popular among children (1620 yen each *topping is charged separately). “Natto and rice” and “salmon roe rice bowl” are popular among adults (3450 yen each). You can also make tempura and lettuce by “the old wax method”(2160 yen). I tried the “natto and rice” which is very particular about reality.

【 “Natto and rice” for adults who want to explore the reality】

The ingredients for “natto and rice” is bright white rice made from plastic, plastic soy beans, green onion made from rubber tube, wire, and short chopsticks. Soy beans looks like nothing but soy beans. 

“Mustard” is essential for natto.

Next, you bend the wire to make circle.

We glue the chopsticks on the circle of wire. Put the sire on the base…and wow! It is exactly how natto and rice looks!

When the base with chopsticks is fixed on the bowl, it got a lot close to the completion!!

Next is the rice bits. We put rice bits are kneaded with glue and put little by little in the bowl where the chopsticks are fixed on. 

When we mix the glue with yellow color, it turns into the sticky natto. 

Now the sticky natto is put on top of the chopsticks with forceps. Natto falling from the chopsticks is pulling strings behind. It is just how natto looks!  

The finishing touch is pulling more strings to show the stickiness and put green onion!

If you don’t like natto, “salmon roe with rice” is also available (3450 yen).
