Sightseeing - Appreciate art

Focusing on the modern art related to Fukuoka, this museum introduces Japanese art widely and deeply from paintings from Edo period to modern craft.

Although it is in the busiest area of Kyushu, Tenjin (North), you can spend relaxing time in “Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art” located in Susaki Park rich in green and away from the bustle of the city.



Art works collected here is related to artists from Fukuoka and Fukuoka museum.

“Candle” by Yajuro Takano from Taisho Period (Reference piece from the collection)


“The Dream of Saigon” by Kenichi Nakamura 1947 (Reference piece from the collection)


“Figure of Sea Turtle” from the collection of Ogata family. The picture collection of Ogata family is cultural asset of Fukushima prefecture. (Reference piece from the collection)


“Stencil picture dying kimono “Akimugi” by Toshiko Kamaga, 1988. It is a rare museum where crafts of modern artists are collected and displayed. (Reference piece from the collection)



The next artwork is “Yoyogino Hara” by a western painter Zenzaburo Kojima, who was born in Nakasunakamachi, Fukuoka-shi (Current Nakasu Hakata-ku) (1934). (Displays are as of November 21st, 2017. * Display changes depending on the season.)



One of the Characteristics of “Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art” is that there are many collection of a western painter introduced earlier, Yajuro Takashima, who was born in Kurume. He has many fans so there is a special exhibit for Yajuro Takashima on the 4th floor next to the normal exhibit. Five artworks of Takashima is displayed on both side. The artworks are changed periodically.


On the shelf next to the Yajuro Takashima, flyers for exhibit in other parts of Japan is located. Some fans are looking forward to this flyers.


The library was passed down from “Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Culture” so it is very large. You can read over 10,000 books, not only just art books, but also books about the area, general books, magazines, and picture books.



Large collection of books in foreign language are available.


There is “Origami Area” in the library. It shows you how to make rare items so please give it a try!

How about taking a break at the coffee shop on the first floor after enjoying the exhibit and library?


It is a very comfortable place where you can see the greens in the park and sunshine is through the large window. There are wide range of menus. Menus recommended by the staff are slow stewed “Curry and Rice” (648 yen) and “Hayashi Rice” (648 yen).

How about taking a short trip to “Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art” to see artwork related to Fukuoka and feel the local atmosphere of Fukuoka? After seeing the artwork, you will see a different aspect of “Tenjin, the shopping heaven”.
