Nagahama fish market is one of the largest fish market where about 300 types of fish that are caught in Genkainada, Sea of Japan, and the East China Sea are sold in a year. Fish caught in the rich Genkainada were swimming in the rough wave, so the meat is firm and delicious. It is known nationwide as "the kitchen of Fukuoka" that supports "the city with delicious fish, Fukuoka".


Anyone can go to the market hall located in the center of the market.  On the first floor, there are restaurants where you can eat fresh seafood and souvenir shops where you can get processed seafood.


There is "Observation Plaza" located on the top floor (13th floor) and you can see Shikanoshima Island and "Fukuoka Dome" below.


In "Watching Plaza" on the second floor, you can see the information about fish such as the system of the fish market, how to bid for fish, types of fish that are caught in Japan and how to catch those fish, how to cook fish and nutrition information in panels and movies.  You can learn about fish culture of Japan while enjoying.

Since "Nagashima Fish Market" is a wholesale market, normal people cannot enter or purchase there. On the second Saturday of the month, however, to peek the interest of fish-eating, part of the market is open for public as "Citizen Thanks Day". 



It starts 9:00 in the morning, the road around the market is crowded and there are many people who have cooler boxes, large bags, and cases.  Bargen items are usually gone before 10:00.


People starts gathering for the popular event, "tuna cutting performance" held every time. Today's tuna is caught in Goto, Nagasaki and weigh 67.3kg. It is so large that a child cannot put their hands around the middle.


"The sign of fresh tuna is dark black back. Fish are often filleted int 3 pieces, but tuna is filleted into 5 pieces.  Since they are so big, we have to use a knife-like katana or large broad bladed knife." Chief's talk filled with humor is also the reason for is popularity.



Master manipulation of the knife cuts the tuna into piecess quickly. Delicate and daynamic...It shows the atatomy of the whole tuna that you canno imagine from the sashimi you usually eat.


What is uniqe about this show is that bidding starts as soon as the fish is cut up.  "Raise your hand if you want this jaw meat!!" Since the price is great, many people want them.


Of course, they sell Otoro, Chutoro, and sashimi blocks are sold in the end.




There are many areas where you can experience fish such as an area where they teach you how to fillet fish called "Fish filleting performance".



In the food courtoutside, you can eat food that use seafood such as grilled seafood and kamaboko.  How about watching, touching, and eating fish at "Nagahama Fish Market" in the morning on the second Saturday and enjoy fish filled time?
