Hakata Gion Yamakasa At A Glance

Offering ritual to the Kushida Shrine's god of Gion, which is held annualy from July 1st to 15th. Although there are various theories, according to a popular theory, it originated in 1241. In "Oi Yamakasa" on July 15th, seven Yamakasas does "Kushida Iri" in order one by one from 4:59 am and are timed on the time it takes for "Mawaridome" in Suzakimachi. "Kazari-yamakasa" floats will be displayed around Hakata area during this period. It was registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
